Outreach Opportunities

Books, Socks, Hats, Gloves & Scarfs for School 6
Many of us would say that the greatest gift that we were every given was a love of reading.  We thank our parents and our teachers for not just teaching us to read but teaching us to love to read.  Studies have shown that the more books and magazines and other reading material there is in a home, the more likely the children in that home will become competent readers and will have that love of reading

For the third year we are going to try to give every child at School 6 in Buffalo a brand new book of their very own. That is 600 (actually 595) books.

We collected school supplies year for School 6 in Buffalo.  We have written grants to put books into the classrooms.  In this school nearly all of the students live near the poverty level.  The more books we can get to the kids, the better their chances of escaping poverty.

Between December 2 and January 6 we will collect books and then we will deliver them to the school.  Our hope is that every child will have a brand new book all their own.

We need books at all reading levels from picture books through Harry Potter.  Pick out a couple of your favorite books (or your kid’s favorite books) and bring them in.  There are lists of suggested titles on a poster in the parish hall and on the outreach bulletin board.

If you want to order books from Amazon remember that if you go to St. Paul’s web-site first and click on the Amazon link there that St. Paul’s will receive a donation of a portion of your purchase.

If you want to make a cash contribution, please note the envelope or check as “School 6”.  In addition to purchasing books, we will use cash contributions to help purchase 2 bicycles for the school.  These will be awarded in June as part of the program encouraging students to be leaders of the school.

We are also collecting socks and hats and gloves along with the books this year.  If you’ve ever had kids you know that their socks and hats and gloves seem to disappear and for families in poverty they are sometimes hard to replace.  So, when you bring a book, bring a pair of socks or gloves or a hat too.

We will bless the books on January 6 and send them off to the school with our Epiphany blessings.

The books we need are:
Pre-K & K – 87
1 & 2 grade – 126
3 & 4 grade – 120
5 & 6 grade – 141
7 & 8 grade - 121

Hearts and Hands
Hearts and Hands Faith in Action is a ministry that helps senior citizens stay independent by providing volunteers help.

St. Paul’s is a sponsoring congregation for Hearts and Hands.  The ministry works because people volunteer to do what they can.  They have particular needs for people to drive clients to appointments and for minor home repairs.

Hearts and Hands will provide training and screening for volunteers – they then coordinate their clients needs with the availability of volunteers.  Hearts and Hands cover their volunteers with liability insurance and can pay mileage reimbursement if you need it.

There is a flyer on the Outreach bulletin board in the hallway with information on how to contact Hearts and Hands to get more information or to volunteer.
